==Ella Austin==
Born in Ohio on February 17, 1856 Ella Stephens married Edward Austin, a man from South Carolina, in Washington, Ohio on June 29, 1879. However, by 1890 Ella and Edward had moved to San Antonio and opened their West side home to children in need.〔U.S. Census of 1880, Bexar County, Texas〕 By 1897 they had taken in so many children that their home officially became an orphanage.〔Danini, Carmina. 1997. “E. Side center a real godsend for young, old.” San Antonio Express News, 31 November 1997.〕 Eventually the overcrowded conditions led to the purchase of a two-story structure on the East Side at 1920 Burnet Street.〔Mason, Kenneth. 1998. “The Cant of Race: Social Development.” In African Americans and Race Relations in San Antonio, Texas 1867-1937, 182-183.
